Hello Friends, as we say goodbye to another wonderful, Kentucky spring, I think about all the great bounties this beautiful season gives us. This Spring at Red Bird we welcomed in 21 new families to our Grow Appalachia program. In the last few months we have had amazing turnouts at our four monthly meetings with about 90 percent of members coming to each meeting. We have distributed nearly 6000 lbs of seed potatoes, spring and summer vegetable varieties, along with organic pesticide and all the tools to go with it. We’ve been blessed to have gotten to tilth for almost half of our members.

At our meeting this month we talked about garden maintenance, disease and organic pest control, and how to apply these different methods and spot any diseases or changes in our gardens. Some of our members have also been pulling double duty and attending our Red Bird Farmers Market as not only buyers but also as vendors.  We have had two amazing days at our farmers market this year, which opened on June 7th, that brought out around 300 local visitors and shoppers. Although its still a little early, there are lots of different crops coming in and a lot more to be harvested in the near future.
