Part of our preparation for the new growing season is making sure we have the right equipment for people with disabilities to grow some of their food. This unfinished disability raised garden bed is 36″ high which is suitable for people who are comfortable standing. It is 3 feet wide and 8 feet long. For people who need to sit as in a wheelchair, we plan to bury the legs at least 4″. The depth closest to the edge is 6″ and the deepest in the middle is 13″. To finish this box, we plan to close-in the ends with 1/4″ plywood cut to 12″, and line the box with landscape fabric. This box costs us about $60 in materials. The ability for a disabled person to grow some of their food is priceless! Please, feel free to comment if you have any ideas!
Thanks! We are converting a section of our yard at the offices to an accessible plot – it is already elevated behind a stone retaining wall. We’d love to hear about any tools/methods you find particularly useful for folks using wheelchairs.
