Well here we are, already July! Time just keeps flying on by, and we can’t slow it down. It has been an unusual July here in western Kentucky as we have had excessive rainfall. Although the rain makes the plants grow, unfortunately it brings on uncontrollable amount of weeds. In between rain showers we are staying busy trying to till and pull weeds. A perk to all of the rain, it has made pulling weeds a bit easier!
We have currently been harvesting lots of hearty vegetables the last few weeks. Cabbage, peas, broccoli, greens, peppers, onions, squash, zucchini, eggplant, and LOTS of cucumbers. We have had a few ripe tomatoes, but should have bundles more to come as everyone is patiently anticipating some fresh tomatoes. So exciting to start harvesting some goods from all of the hard work. Nothing better than eating your own home-grown food!
We have had our first harvest of green beans this week at the Morganfield Senior Citizens center. The seniors were very excited to see the fresh green beans coming in. At the Sturgis Presbyterian Church, the herb bed is doing beautifully. We have had lots of fresh basil, dill, and cilantro.
Fall is coming on sooner than we could have imagined, so we’re going to buckle down and get ready for putting in some cool weather crops. We are hoping to build some raised beds for some fall gardens.
