This winter has brought a some “firsts” to our Grow Appalachia gardeners here in Alderson. One of our gardeners just planted her first winter crops….ever! Her beige hoops and row cover contrast sharply with the dark, freshly turned soil that surrounds them. Soon though, her winter garden will blend right into a blanket of snow. We hope that her garden thrives despite the wicked weather!
Another gardener has shared an exciting announcement: he is planning to run our town’s first CSA! This spring, he hopes to provide abundant produce to the citizens in Alderson and the surrounding area. We think he’ll be a great model for other producers in the area and encourage even greater local production!
Last but not least, one of our gardeners is facilitating our very first community seed swap! We recently started a seed library at the local public library, and Gwen offered to instruct us in different saving techniques. We are thrilled that she will share her knowledge with her fellow Grow Appalachia participants. We enjoy learning from other community members, but what could be better than leveraging the talents of our Grow Appalachia family?
