Representatives from the LEAD Community Organization attended a conference in Berea, Kentucky this past month to learn the basics to the Grow Appalachia project and are ready to get started. Families from all over Logan County have applied to participate and the supplies are starting to arrive. This week we will be sorting the seeds and finishing up the soil samples. Many of the folks involved are ready to get started and are looking forward to a great harvest. We are gearing up for our first workshop next week.

LEAD is partnering with Step by Step, the sponsor for the last two years of Big Ugly Creek’s Grow Appalachia program, to launch this effort in Logan County. In addition to recruiting individual families, we are helping strengthen a community garden in Cora, in collaboration with youth leaders hosted by American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). Also, we are expanding the Junior Master Gardener program through summer programs sponsored by Step by Step and Logan County Schools in Man and Chapmanville.
