This week we had the first meeting for Grow Appalachia. There are lots of people ready and waiting for the warm weather so the growing can begin.
We had about 22 adults and 10 children that attended Monday’s meeting. We enjoyed bean dip and foccacia – local flour and beans, and garlic from one of our participants. Our topic was Gardening 101. Using all the requirements of the GA program we discussed soil sampling and why we use organic methods. Using our previous GA handbook, we added information from our Youth Intern Program and ASPI Tech Papers to make our workbooks a truly comprehensive, yet accessible tool. Perhaps the most fun, was working on the garden plans. From folks with details down to the variety to friends who didn’t even know what they could grow in a garden, everyone is dreaming big!
We have already started some seeds in the greenhouse which are growing great.
Workbooks seem like a great idea.
We do workbooks instead of handouts at the workshop. Its alittle easier to already have everything together already. Also easier for the participant to keep everything together so they can look back on it in coming years.
