Hello, my name is Alex Sanders and I am the Grow Appalachia Site Supervisor at Project Worth Outreach in Menifee County, Kentucky.  It has been a while since I have posted on here because I have been dealing with some pretty serious health issues recently.  I hope that these issues are mostly behind me and I can move forward with the work of Grow Appalachia that is so important to me, my agency and more importantly the people of our region.

It seems that in the past month we have not had very  many days without rain or enough days in between rain for the ground to dry up enough to do any type of garden work.  It has taken quite a long time to finally get all of our garden spots tilled.  But at long last, hooray, this has been accomplished.  All of our gardeners have planted some seed and our greenhouse plants are ready to be planted.  Hopefully all of these will be planted in the next few days.

Our next participant’s meeting is on Tuesday, May 21 at 6 PM.  We expect an excellent turnout as we have had at all of our meetings.  As I stated earlier, I have been dealing with some health issues so the topic of our next meeting comes in at a very appropriate time as the subject will be heart healthy cooking.  As I have learned recently this is not an easy task.  It is more than dieting, it has to be a lifestyle change.   In this lifestyle change one must examine everything they put in their mouth.  One must eat smarter by consuming smaller portions  of everything as well as eliminating some foods altogether and severely restricting others.  Thank GOD for organic food and Grow Appalachia because this is a great place to start eating healthier.  Also, at our next meeting we will be discussing the chicken tractor program as well as a bee keeping program.  We would like to gauge the interest in both programs and try to get a solid count on the number of people who will commit to these program.  In my preliminary research, I have found that there is quite a bit of interest in these programs.  We shall see come Tuesday evening.

Well, that’s about all I got for now.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and the weather permits everyone a chance to get into their garden.  I hope everyone stays healthy and really enjoys the time they have to work in the gardens of Grow Appalachia.  Please do not take these opportunities for granted because they can be taken away in the blink of an eye.  Happy gardening.
