The Leslie County Grow Appalachia members had the opportunity to meet some wonderful folks from various organizations at our September meeting. We had the pleasure of hosting a resource fair with Grow Appalachia. Members visited tables and learned about many different opportunities; they spoke with Daniel Skinner, our local Private Lands Biologist from the Kentucky Department of Wildlife. The big question was: “What do we do about the deer?” He had some really good suggestions, including nuisance deer tags.

The University of Kentucky Center for Crop Diversification (CCD) representative spoke about the things she can help farmers with, such as business plans, growing, and marketing better. They create and curate up-to-date, relevant, and accessible publications, price reports, videos, and in-person training opportunities.

Storey, a representative from Grow Appalachia, was there to tell farmers what they do, along with addressing food insecurity. She told them about how they sell growing supplies and equipment to build program income to support and expand gardening resources. She also explained how they provide support for new, beginning, and established farmers across Kentucky.

Everyone in attendance learned a lot about what organizations had to offer. It was a great event and really made an impact on people. Representatives were there from the Kentucky Horticulture Council, KCARD, the Leslie County Soil Conservation office, the USDA, Kentucky Department of Agriculture Policy, just to name a few.

I would love to thank everyone who made this evening a success.
It was a great time, with wonderful people and fantastic food.
