There is something truly special about planting a seed and watching it grow. Gardening teaches patience, dedication, and hope — lessons that reach far beyond the garden itself. Through Grow Sustainab-LEE and Grow Appalachia, our community has experienced firsthand how gardening can bring people together, provide valuable life skills, and create lasting change for families across Lee County.
One participant, Ms. Stephanie Woods, beautifully described the impact of the program by sharing the following:
“Gertrude Jekyll, the famous British horticulturalist, said ‘The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.’ Undoubtedly this best sums up our experience with Grow SustainabLEE and Grow Appalachia. This program is an invaluable resource to our community. Not only are students taught the basics of organic gardening, they are also given the necessary tools to best reach their potentials and goals. This class is the seed, soil, and sun for participants of all ages and abilities. I am currently in my third year as a participant and many others have been there longer! This truly speaks to how one tiny seed, once sown, can impact a family, neighborhood, and community. Thank you to the Lee County Agricultural Extension and Amy, our Extension Agent, for making this program happen!”
These words perfectly capture the heart of Grow Sustainab-LEE. What starts as a simple gardening class quickly grows into something much larger — confidence, friendships, healthier lifestyles, and stronger community connections. Participants not only learn how to grow fresh food organically, but also gain knowledge and skills they can carry with them for years to come.
The continued involvement of returning participants year after year is a testament to the positive impact this program has on our community. Each season brings new opportunities to learn, grow, and share in the joy of cultivating something meaningful together. Because of their efforts, seeds are being planted that will continue to grow for generations to come.
