Fresh, Local, and Growing
Fall is on his way to Eastern Kentucky! Leaves are turning, buckeyes and walnuts are falling, the deer are starting to travel and have all lost their velvet with the chill that is drifting into the air. The Owsley County Farmers Market has been buzzing all summer long with more than just fresh produce — it is full of energy, innovation, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Grow App participants.
As part of the Grow App program, our local growers, artisans, and food vendors have been receiving the tools, mentorship, training and support to grow and produce their own products, some even expanding into a small businesses, and increasing availability to fresh local food, Neighbors are also enjoying their bounty from a year that we feared would be a disaster with the weather we’ve experienced. Several of our members have built farm stands, ensuring they will be able to expand their markets well into the winter and early spring months.
Produce and homemade goods line the market. Grow App participants are showcasing their products, stories of resilience, sustainability, and local impact. Market shoppers are supporting real people and real families from their communities when they shop at a farmers market. We are even drawing in customers from surrounding counties.
As the harvest season winds into fall, our farmers market will remain a lively community gathering spot until the end of September, with late fall pop up markets on the calander. Whether you’re shopping for vegetables, honey, baked goods, or handmade crafts, shop local and know you’re supporting the future of local food and a real family from your community.
