Logan County WV March 2025

It’s that time of the year to start getting everything ready to begin gardening, as soon as the weather starts being good to us and the gardens. We’ve had a very rough winter, more snow than we have had in years- something the wooly bears predicted last fall with pretty good accuracy.

I have quite a few people who are interested in trying their hand at gardening this year. Some of them know how to garden, some are learning, and several know more than I will ever learn. Those that are learning will be assigned to a garden mentor who is experienced and will help them garden successfully.

Buck and I are going to try to work with some children this year, possibly starting in fourth or fifth grade. We have about four who are interested in gardening, and we will show them how to start by setting out some tomato plants, onions, lettuce, carrots, etc. We’ll have them keep a journal tracking when they water, how much their garden has grown, and take pictures of the garden along the way. This will help them learn, and I really think we can grow some good future gardeners with this.

Hopefully this year Mother Nature will be good to us and to our gardens so that we’ll have abundant harvests of produce that are preserved to enjoy during the winter months as well as during the growing season.

I am looking forward to this season, meeting new people and hoping we all have a good garden.
