Mountain Heritage is more than just a festival that happens every September in Letcher County. Its who we are, where we came from and keeping traditions alive. Cowan Community Action Group Grow Appalachia held 4 canning classes over the month of September with an average of 60 plus participants at each class. Classes were held at CANE Kitchen and lead by Brandon Fleming. They learned to can pears, grape jelly, pepper jelly and apple butter. Generations came together to sit and learn how to keep the traditions going. It was a beautiful thing to see.
To close September out we had a booth set up at the Mountain Hertiage Festival to feel like a front porch and had a grower pick us a bushel of green beans and folks would stop by and talk and break beans, share stories, play a game of checkers or just simply sit down in a dry area. It was great month of community gatherings, lessons and traditions.
