With the scorching dry heat of June, we were starting to wonder how the season would unfold. We finally got enough rain and cooler weather here in Morristown to pull in some decent harvests. Sometimes when it starts off rocky, it ends up smoothing out and vice versa, as well as everything in between. One thing that I have noticed is that the berries do great under these hot and dry conditions so long as the rain happens at the right time. Every season is different and this year started out rough. I am proud of our participants this year for toughing through the heat and not giving up.
We enjoyed touring the gardens this year and saw some struggles, but also some successful gardens that were still going strong. I believe August will prove fruitful as well. We are looking forward to our Canning Workshop and seeing our gardeners before the summer season is over. I will miss this program as I move a few counties away and regroup. Thank You for giving me the opportunity to help serve my community with a much needed backyard garden program! Until the next blog! ~Heather Bolton
