Making the most of the gardening season is a great way to keep harvesting those garden goodies. Fall gardening is an easy way to accomplish making the most out of your garden space and growing time. When considering a fall garden you should keep these things in mind:
- Days to maturity (cooler temperatures slow maturity)
- Heat tolerance
- Insect pressure
- Direct seeding or transplanting
You can also use row covers, high tunnels, low tunnels to your advantage and protect those frost-sensitive crops for a bit longer (a great tool to have in the spring and fall!). Now is the time to start thinking about what you may want to plant for the fall garden harvest as some of Kentucky’s “last safe seeding” dates are quickly approaching. Garlic is also great to plant in the late fall, it is a pretty low maintenance crop that you can enjoy watching grow in the spring and harvest in the summer.
