Gardening is in full swing here at Pine Mountain Settlement School. The farm staff have been busy tending to the farm, plowing the fields, and raising the livestock. This spring has been good on the north side of Pine Mountain, with productivity in abundance. Our sheep lambed well, the goats kidded, and we added 3 steers to finish out of the summer grass. The high tunnels produced lots of lettuce that was served in our campus meals and for the past couple of weeks, we have been harvesting Broccoli, Cauliflower, and Cabbage. Most of our crops are in, the beans are trellised, and squash and zucchini are blooming, as we await more bountiful harvests.

This week, we hosted our annual farm tour. 38 people strolled around the farm, learning new techniques, and discussing production practices. We are getting ready to start the garden visits with our Grow Appalachia members, and are excited to see how everyone’s gardens are doing.
