A good portion of the existing growing space in our community falls within community gardens. However, we continue to increase our efforts to support neighbors who want to grow at home with things like seed and plant distribution, supply sharing, and education. This year, we are excited to already have 8 returning and 2 new home gardeners signed up to partner with us! Over the growing season, we really want to highlight these home gardeners.

Meet Mr. Rick
Though it’s only his second year partnering with us for Grow Appalachia, Rick, pictured above, has been gardening in his backyard in Lower Price Hill for many years. While not intimidated by a new crop, Rick (or Mr. Rick as we all call him) grows primarily staple produce like tomatoes and cucumbers. Rick’s favorite part of gardening? Sharing any extras with his extended family and neighbors.

In addition to his large backyard garden, Rick also has a well-established apple tree that neighborhood kids love to pick from, helps us maintain a perennial herb and pollinator garden that connects to his property, and serves as a great peer resource for other home gardeners.
