Learning Preservation

After working all spring in your garden, it’s very rewarding to see all the produce piling up. However, there is only so much you and your family can consume. It’s always nice to share with neighbors and family. Its also very beneficial to preserve.

We recently had a two-day preservation workshop for our gardeners. The workshop was presented by retired Family and Consumer Sciences Agents from University of Kentucky. Day one taught participants the Boiling-water Canning method and Pressure Canning. Day two focused on Freezing and Dehydrating.

Many participants exclaimed that they feel more comfortable with using a pressure canner after being taught the proper methods. By the end of the two days, many were asking for more classes on preservation. Everyone is really looking forward to pulling produce form the shelf or from the freezer this winter and enjoying their hard work again.
