It was so exciting to hear that there was a new addition to the community gardens this year, Shady Grove Estates.  Shady Grove Estates is one of the developments for the Lafollette Housing Authority.  This is a 30-unit development comprised of 2, 3 and 4-bedroom apartments.  They provide low income housing to those who qualify, while helping to promote family self-efficiency.

This new community garden consists of three raised beds They grew tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, green peppers, banana peppers, cucumbers, corn and green beans.

One of the residence wanted to get involved with gardening.  Her hope was to get the kids involved with learning garden skills and to teach them to eat vegetables.  She also hopes to get other residence to get involved.  Lisa planted with the help of her aunt and a few kids.  They ate green beans through the summer she shared and passed out harvest to get others interested in the garden.

I asked Lisa what her experience was like with grow Appalachia this year.  She said she had such a good experience.  She learned a lot and this was her first-time garden experience.  Next year she hopes to get more people involved, especially the kids.
