Barn, horse, pig, and rooster that the kids from the Math Connection Camp made out of lunch boxes.

The Berea Summer Food Service Program has been up and running for over a month now! This being our first year, we’ve hit a few bumps and obstacles along the way, but mostly it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience.  Here are a few highlights:

Kids got creative with the lunch boxes at the Math Connection Camp. They made a jailhouse, chickens, pigs, horses and a barn!

Andrea Woodward and her research team from the sociology department has been studying the program. The families have been wonderful about participating in their surveys and we are eager to see the results!

Kids are loving the food (especially on the days we serve chicken tenders). One teenage girl remarked, “This is way better than cafeteria food!”

We provided breakfast and lunch for the Splash and Dash event. Over 40 kids participated in the race and our staff had a delightful time cheering them on!

We’ve had so many fun games and activities for kids at our sites including: field trips to the Berea Aquaponics Facility, yoga, beaded lizards, matching game with seeds and plants, visits from the bookmobile and Hummel Planetarium, and the craft table.

We’ve received so much generosity and support from the community. Berea Baptist Church, No Child Cold/No Child Hungry, and Peoples Bank gave considerable monetary donations, First Christian Church donated a vast assortment of craft supplies for kids activities, First Friday offered us a table at their events, The Berea City Pool has been making announcement about us, the Berea Public Library put together activity bins full of games and sports equipment, and the Berea Citizen donated us a weekly advertisement space!

Each day brings forth something new and exciting. We can’t wait to see what adventures the month of July has in store!
