I love Alderson

It’s so exciting to see all that is happening with our food development in Alderson. Grow Appalachia had our first meeting on Feb. 12 and had 12 of our 14 participants sign up that night. As of this week we have all of our participants ready to go and everyone is getting their garden plans and orders ready to go.

Soil samples are another issue. Alderson has nearly 3 ft. off snow on the ground and more to come this weekend, sooooo I guess soil sampling will have to wait till we get a bit of a thaw. The good news is our pest pressure should be down due to the very cold temperatures.

Another huge project for the Food Hub is our indigogo fund raising project to start a not for profit grocery store in our town. We are currently in a food desert. Take a look at our funding page at indigogo – Help Us Start a Grocery Store.

Work is progressing, walls are down and some going back up, walls cleaned and painted, floors are next and we will be ready to start installing shelves, freezers and coolers and then the big day to stock the store. We can’t wait.

Our next Grow Appalachia Alderson meeting will be on March 9th at 6:30 and we will be discussing seed bed preparation and planting techniques.
