Hey Everyone!
My name is David Cornette. I am an intern for Grow Appalachia at the Hindman Settlement School. I have been over here playing in the dirt for a couple of weeks now and have learned a lot that I’d like to share with you!
Stay tuned over the next few weeks as I document our work in the community through stunning photographs and riveting tales! I will also let you in on some folk gardening secrets from the seasoned veterans of Knott County’s plant scene. In the meantime, let me catch you up on what’s been happening.
The image above is a raised bed, a really efficient garden box that we have built and installed for over a dozen families so far. I think we’ve gotten pretty good at it!
In addition to helping members of the community maintain their gardens, I have been working on one of my own at the Settlement School. Below is a before and after picture which shows how it has progressed so far:
I grew a car!
That’s all for now! I look forward to sharing more with you soon!
Whoa! Where did you get the car seeds? 😉 Also, that’s a nice lookin’ garden. Is the fence for pests?
The fence is for deer specifically, but it might be more effective at keeping out rabbits. No deer attacks yet but they are everywhere around here and almost everyone I meet asks me what to do to keep them out. There are a ton of solutions I’ve come across, I will likely do a blog post soon detailing them.
