Last weekend, we had our last scheduled workshop for the summer. We held it at the Farmers Market instead of at the gardens, and it lasted form about 1-3pm, with 22 participants total. Vinnie Kudva, a local master gardener, held a specialty crop workshop.  The workshop was about how to grow unique, edible crops right here in Mingo County. Vinnie brought samples as well as examples of the produce to the market, which made it all the more interesting for participants. Some of the crops included bottle gourd, elephants ear, Japanese eggplant, and bitter melon. Since most of these items were new to people, it was good that he brought samples of easy to make dishes for us to taste, so that we know that we can both grow the plant and make a delicious, easy meal with them!

This weekend, and into yesterday, we planted most of our fall crops. After clearing space last week, and prepping the soil, we planted lettuce, turnips, mustard greens, kale, kohlrabi and more. Already, from just planting on Friday, we have little sprouts popping through! Since our market will run until November this year, we are excited to be ahead of the game and prepared for the fall market months.

And finally— in the most exciting news of the week – we finally got a sturdier, permanent shed!!! See below for the photos. We have desperately needed a shed for all of our tools, weed wacker, and the tiller we plan to purchase shortly.  With the help of grow Appalachia we now have  a beautiful one!!
