Northfork Local Food
In the spring of 2015, the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky engaged community stakeholders in a community assessment and planning around the nexus of food, health, and the economy. During this process, it was recognized that our community would benefit from having an organization solely focused on the local food system and Northfork Local Food (NLF) was born. Northfork was incorporated in May 2015 for the purpose of increasing “access to locally grown and produced foods within communities along and around the North Fork of the Kentucky River.” In that time, NLF has become a community anchor focused on expanding our local food system beyond just farmers markets. We have extensive connections throughout the region and we have leveraged those to develop programs addressing food security issues and nutrition education in our communities. Over the past three years, we have actively been sourcing and purchasing fruits, vegetables, beef, and value-added products from local and regional producers as we work to increase access to local food for everyone. The Grow Appalachia Garden Program enables us to expand our work and empower families to feed themselves and their neighbors.
