Starting something new can feel both exciting and a little intimidating — and that’s exactly how I feel as I begin my first year in the Grow Your Own program. As a first-time gardener, I am stepping into this journey with curiosity, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to learn. My name is Marlea, and as a wife and mom to a very energetic three-year-old daughter, providing healthy, wholesome food for my family is incredibly important to me.
I have always admired people who can step into their backyard and harvest fresh vegetables for dinner. There’s something empowering about knowing exactly where your food comes from and how it was grown. Until now, gardening felt overwhelming — soil types, watering schedules, pests, seasons — it all seemed like a foreign language. That’s why I am so grateful for the opportunity to be part of this program. Having structured monthly classes, guidance from experienced gardeners, and access to supplies makes learning feel approachable and achievable.
What excites me most is the chance to grow clean, healthy, organic vegetables for my family. In today’s world, it can be hard to know what is truly in the food we buy at the store. Being able to grow our own produce means I can feel confident about what we are putting on our table. I love the idea of walking outside with my daughter and letting her pick tomatoes or snap peas right off the plant. I hope this experience not only feeds our bodies but also teaches her valuable lessons about patience, responsibility, and where food really comes from.
I’m also looking forward to the sense of accomplishment that comes from nurturing something from seed to harvest. Gardening seems like such a powerful metaphor for life — you prepare, you plant, you tend carefully, and with time and consistency, growth happens. I know there will be challenges along the way. I may overwater. I may forget to fertilize. I may lose a plant or two. But I’m choosing to see those moments as opportunities to learn rather than failures.
Another thing I’m hoping to gain from this program is community. Sharing harvest reports, learning alongside other beginners, and celebrating small successes together feels incredibly motivating. It’s comforting to know I won’t be figuring this out alone.
Here’s to new beginnings, healthy harvests, and a year of learning through “Grow Your Own.”
