We are thrilled to celebrate one of our dedicated growers, Beverly Hackworth, who brought home top honors from this year’s Kentucky State Fair!

Beverly entered the Large Hot Peppers category, competing against approximately 26 other entries with her Hot Cayenne, Hot Banana, and Hungarian Wax peppers. She also entered the Small Hot Peppers category with Hot Cayenne, Hungarian Wax, and Witches Fingers.

Each entry required three different varieties with five peppers from each — and the competition was fierce!

Despite the tough field, Beverly earned 2nd Place in the Large Hot Peppers category and received an Honorable Mention in the Small Hot Peppers category — a rare recognition at our State Fair.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the journey Beverly took to get here. After experiencing a fall last year, she nearly skipped planting a garden altogether. But with encouragement from her community — especially from our county Extension Agent (pictured with Beverly) — she decided to give it another go. As Beverly shared, “It was a great year for

growing hot peppers — it sure was a hot summer!”

Following her State Fair success, Beverly was honored again at the Floyd County Agriculture Banquet, where she was named Producer of the Year — a well-deserved recognition of her dedication and hard work.

Beverly’s passion for gardening began years ago alongside her late husband, and she continues to grow in his memory. Her favorite growing tip? “If your pepper plants are struggling, try spraying them with Epsom salt water — it really helps!”

We’re so proud to have Ms. Beverly as a part of our Grow Appalachia program. The knowledge, experience, and joy she brings to our community are truly invaluable. This year, her perseverance, passion, and pepper-growing prowess have been nothing short of inspiring.
