Honoring our past, celebrating our present, supporting a sustainable food future.

The Appalachian Food Summit is a community of writers, chefs, farmers, scholars, community activists and traditional mountain food enthusiasts gathered around the table to honor the past, celebrate the present and support a sustainable future for Appalachian food and people.

Founded in 2013, the first Summit gathering was hosted in the Spring of 2014 at the Hindman Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky and drew a crowd of 75 traditional food enthusiasts from the region and beyond.

The second Appalachia Food Summit took place on September 26, 2015 at Heartwood in Abingdon, Virginia. The gathering included speakers, discussions and locally sourced meals prepared by Appalachia-based chefs showcasing some of the best in traditional and innovative mountain cooking.

Our third Summit, held at Berea College drew focus to underrepresented stories of our region, paying particular attention to diverse communities that make up mountain foodways. We listened to guest authors like Gurney Norman and Silas House, guest chefs like Toni Tipton Martin and Steven Alvarez, and craft brewers like Daniel Stroud of Jarfly Brewing. The Summit took us on a journey along the many routes our mountain families have traveled, honoring the diverse origins, continued evolutions and never-ending nourishment of the Appalachian plate.
